Carrick Admits ‘Defeat Hurts’ as Newcastle End Manchester United’s Unbeaten Run

Manchester United manager Michael Carrick has expressed disappointment following his side’s 2-1 defeat to Newcastle United on Wednesday night, the first loss of his tenure at Old Trafford. The dramatic clash at St James’ Park dealt a blow to United’s push for Champions League qualification, with the visitors failing to capitalise on a numerical advantage in the second half.

Late Drama Decides the Tie

Newcastle broke the deadlock through Anthony Gordon, who calmly converted from the penalty spot after a chaotic spell that also saw Jacob Ramsey sent off for a second bookable offence. United responded before the break, with Casemiro restoring parity to keep the contest finely balanced heading into halftime.

Despite enjoying a man advantage for much of the second period, United struggled to assert control. Their inability to press home their advantage proved costly when substitute William Osula produced a moment of brilliance late on, surging down the right flank, cutting inside, and curling a stunning effort beyond goalkeeper Senne Lammens to seal victory for the 10-man hosts.

Carrick: “We Didn’t Play Well Enough”

Speaking after the match, Carrick admitted his side fell short of expectations.

We are not happy with the way we played tonight. We had the game largely in our hands at one stage, but didn’t kick on. It’s bitterly disappointing

Michael Carrick

The former United midfielder had enjoyed a strong start since taking charge in January, winning six and drawing one of his first seven matches. He was also unbeaten during his previous interim spell in 2021. However, Carrick dismissed the idea that Newcastle’s red card influenced the result.

It wasn’t about the 10 men. We just didn’t play well enough. We can’t make excuses. We all take responsibility

Michael Carrick

Focus Shifts to the Next Game

Currently sitting third in the Premier League table, United remain in a solid position in the race for a top-five finish despite the setback. Carrick urged his players to regroup quickly.

We’ve lost one game. In the bigger picture, we’re still in a decent position. Tonight hurts, but we have to get back to work, improve, and focus on the next one

Michael Carrick

The defeat serves as a reminder that the margins remain tight in the race for European qualification , and that consistency will be key in the final stretch of the season.
