The upcoming Kip Keino Classic is set to deliver a blockbuster sprint showdown as Olympic 200m champion Gabby Thomas prepares to face off against Kenya’s 400m record holder Mercy Oketch in a highly anticipated one-lap race on April 24. The event will be staged at the iconic Kip Keino Classic, which continues to attract some of the world’s top track stars.
Thomas Steps Up to the 400m Challenge
Meet director Barnaba Korir confirmed that Thomas will not compete in her usual 100m or 200m events this time, instead opting for the demanding 400m race. He added that her participation strengthens the global profile of the meet, describing her as one of the most accomplished sprinters lining up in Nairobi.
Busy Build-Up to Nairobi
Thomas has already opened her 2026 season in strong form, winning at the Clyde Littlefield Texas Relays before heading into a packed international schedule. Her preparations include appearances at the Addis Ababa Grand Prix on April 18 and later the Botswana Golden Grand Prix on April 26.
After an injury-disrupted 2025 season that kept her out of major competitions including the Tokyo World Championships, Thomas has returned to form with renewed focus. Her career highlights include Olympic 200m gold in Paris, alongside relay victories in the 4x100m and 4x400m events, as well as a 2023 World Championships silver medal.
Oketch in Record-Breaking Form
On the other side, Mercy Oketch has been in outstanding shape since the start of the 2026 season. She recently shattered the Kenyan indoor 400m record at the World Indoor Championships in Torun, Poland, clocking an impressive 51.25 seconds, underlining her growing dominance in the one-lap race.
Her recent performances set the stage for a competitive showdown against one of the world’s most decorated sprinters.
Enhanced Fan Experience in Nairobi
For the first time, the Kip Keino Classic will be held under floodlights, adding a new dimension to the atmosphere. Korir assured fans of tight security arrangements, noting coordination between Athletics Kenya, police, county security teams, and the National Youth Service. Entertainment will also be part of the evening program, with performances expected to complement the track action. Artist Iyaani is set to headline the entertainment lineup.
What to Expect
With world-class athletes, a new evening format, and a packed program of events, this year’s Kip Keino Classic is shaping up to be one of the most exciting editions yet. The entry list and full order of events for the 2026 World Athletics Continental Tour meeting have also been released alongside the buildup to the competition.
