The President of the Law Society of Kenya (LSK), Faith Odhiambo, has firmly clarified her non-involvement in the work of a government-appointed panel tasked with compensating victims of recent protests. In a statement titled “Duty and Loyalty: A Call to Serve,” Odhiambo reiterated her unwavering commitment to the Constitution of Kenya and the people she represents.

It is my solemn patriotic duty and obligation to respect, uphold, and defend the Constitution of Kenya

No Role in Government Panel Beyond Swearing-In

Faith Odhiambo explained that her only connection to the Panel of Experts on Compensation of Victims of Demonstrations and Riots was participating in their swearing-in ceremony. Beyond that, she has had no involvement in any meetings or engagements with the panel.

I respect the rule of law and abide by the orders given by the High Court. I would like to emphasise that I do not work for the Government of Kenya nor the opposition; my call is to serve the people of Kenya and my learned colleagues at the Law Society of Kenya

Standing with Victims and Upholding Justice

Faith Odhiambo emphasized that she continues to consult widely with stakeholders while attentively listening to the voices of victims still seeking justice for abuses suffered during the demonstrations. She highlighted that many Kenyans were either killed, injured, or are currently facing trumped-up charges stemming from the protests.

Call for Review of Terrorism Charges

Renewing her firm stance, Faith Odhiambo called on the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (ODPP) to immediately review the terrorism charges filed against peaceful demonstrators. She stated that she maintains the call to the ODPP to review the trumped-up terrorism charges against peaceful protesters; and shift focus on prosecuting the trigger-happy officers who were caught on camera using excessive force to undermine the right to freedom of assembly.

Faith Odhiambo assured Kenyans that the Law Society of Kenya would remain steadfast in offering legal aid and pro bono services to victims and survivors of police brutality.
