Kenyan marathon legend Eliud Kipchoge has hailed the arrival of global sportswear giant Nike in Kenya, describing it as a major milestone for innovation, athletics, and the country’s sporting legacy. The company officially launched its first store in East Africa at Sarit Centre in Westlands, Nairobi, marking a significant expansion into the region’s growing sports and lifestyle market.

Kipchoge, who has worked closely with Nike for more than two decades, said the brand’s physical presence in Kenya represents more than just business expansion—it reflects the country’s deep connection to global athletics innovation. Over the years, Kipchoge has played a key role in collaborating with Nike’s performance innovation teams, helping shape advanced running gear used by elite athletes worldwide.

In 2023, Nike and Kipchoge unveiled the Kipchoge Nike Collection, a signature line inspired by his training philosophy, discipline, and the iconic “No Human Is Limited” message. The collection features elite racing shoes such as the Alphafly 3 and Vaporfly 4 EK editions, designed to enhance performance at the highest level of competitive running.

Speaking during the launch, Kipchoge expressed pride in the brand’s decision to establish roots in Kenya, calling it a proud moment not only for him but also for the country. He noted that the opening of the store reflects Kenya’s growing influence in global sports and innovation, especially in long-distance running.

Kipchoge also shared his long-term vision for athletics in Africa, expressing hope that the continent could one day host a World Marathon Major event, a move he believes would further elevate African sport on the global stage.

Nike’s entry into Kenya follows an extensive search process, with company officials revealing that it took nearly two years to identify the ideal location for its first regional outlet. The brand’s East Africa General Manager, Kieran Murphy, said the company sees Kenya as a key growth market with strong demand for both performance and lifestyle sportswear. Nike also emphasized its intention to better understand local consumers in order to tailor products that suit the African market while maintaining global standards.

The company acknowledged concerns about pricing, noting that its product range is designed to cater to different income groups. While some items fall in the premium category, Nike says it is working to ensure a wider range of affordable options is available to customers.

Nike also revealed ambitious expansion plans, with at least three stores expected in Kenya within the next year. The Sarit Centre outlet is only the first step in a broader regional strategy. The brand already has a long-standing partnership with Kenyan athletics bodies, including supplying kits for national teams through collaborations with the National Olympic Committee of Kenya and Athletics Kenya.

Nike’s entry into Kenya marks a significant moment for both the sportswear industry and the country’s athletic community. With strong backing from elite athletes like Kipchoge and a growing regional presence, the brand is positioning itself at the heart of Kenya’s sporting future. As expansion continues, both athletes and consumers are expected to benefit from increased access to performance innovation and global sports culture.
