Former Nairobi Governor Mike Mbuvi Sonko has declared that his political journey is far from over after officially registering a new political outfit—the National Economic Development Party (NEDP). The former governor, who was impeached in December 2020, says he is prepared to pursue a fresh legal battle aimed at overturning the Supreme Court ruling that confirmed his removal from office.
Sonko spoke on Tuesday outside the Office of the Registrar of Political Parties, where he confirmed that NEDP had been successfully registered and would soon be launched nationally.
Sonko Prepares to Return to Supreme Court for Review
Although an impeached leader is barred from vying for public office, Sonko insists that his case is far from concluded. He revealed plans to return to the Supreme Court seeking a review, arguing that he now has fresh evidence capable of altering the earlier judgment.
Yes, I have exhausted all my appeals up to the Supreme Court, but I have a very strong case coming up for review based on new evidence in my possession
Mike SonkoAccording to Sonko, several Nairobi MCAs who voted to impeach him have since sworn affidavits claiming they were coerced by influential government figures to support the impeachment motion.
I have affidavits from some leaders disowning the impeachment; this is the new evidence I intend to file
Mike Sonko He further noted that while the Supreme Court upheld the impeachment, the East African Court of Justice (EACJ) later ruled in his favour, finding that the process leading to his removal had been illegal.
Why Sonko Believes He Can Still Run for Office
Sonko anchored his optimism on Article 193 of the Constitution, which states that a person cannot be disqualified from contesting for a seat unless all avenues of appeal and review have been fully exhausted.
In 24 hours, the Supreme Court buried my political career but it is not yet over. I am returning to court on a review basis, and that means I remain eligible to vie for any seat until that review is determined
Mike Sonko NEDP to Focus on Youthful Leadership
Sonko says the National Economic Development Party will not be a personal political vehicle but a platform for ordinary Kenyans particularly the youth.
This is not about Sonko but about empowering ordinary Kenyans. We are starting a nationwide recruitment drive and inviting Kenyans to join this new movement, which marks a fresh break from traditional politics
Mike Sonko According to him, the party will prioritize young leaders who are ready to take charge of the country’s political future.
NEDP Leadership Structure Unveiled
The former governor unveiled the first lineup of party officials, placing himself at the helm as Party Leader. Key positions include:
- Anthony Manyara – Deputy Party Leader
- Naomi Chebet Masai – Deputy Party Leader
- John Nyamu – National Chairperson
- Ben Mulwa – Secretary General
- Eric Njoroge – Deputy Secretary General
- Francis Wambua – Treasurer
- Laura Mwende – Deputy Treasurer
- Peterson Maina – National Organising Secretary
- Joseph Kiangoi – Deputy Organising Secretary
Youth leader Naomi Chebet Masai said NEDP intends to redefine the role of young people in politics.
As youths, we will no longer sit at the dining table we will be the ones preparing the menu,” she said, stressing the party’s commitment to meaningful youth inclusion, not tokenism
Mike Sonko Party Launch Coming Soon
Sonko said that while the registration process is complete, the official launch of the National Economic Development Party will be held at a later date, with details to be announced soon.
The former governor, who has previously served as Makadara MP, Nairobi Senator, and Governor, insists his political path is still open—pending the Supreme Court review he intends to file.
