The Mombasa County Government has announced an ambitious plan to invest approximately Ksh.70 million in upgrading Uhuru Gardens, aiming to turn the iconic public space into a modern recreation and tourism destination. The initiative, branded “Uhuru Gardens 2.0,” seeks to breathe new life into the park by creating a dynamic environment that caters to families, fitness lovers, tourists, and community groups.
Under the proposed redevelopment, the park will feature designated picnic areas, expansive green lawns, a state-of-the-art children’s playground, and outdoor fitness zones. Walking and jogging tracks will also be introduced to encourage healthy living among residents. To enhance user convenience, the project will include the construction of modern washrooms as well as baby care facilities such as nappy-changing rooms.
In a bid to promote culture and social interaction, the revamped park will also host an amphitheatre designed for live performances, entertainment events, and community gatherings. Additionally, the county plans to set up a Tourist Information Centre within the park to provide visitors with insights into Mombasa’s rich attractions and tourism experiences.
Other key improvements will include extensive landscaping, beautification works, and the installation of a secure perimeter wall to ensure safety and protect the facility. County officials say the redevelopment is part of a broader strategy to enhance public amenities, boost tourism, and improve the overall quality of life for residents. Once complete, Uhuru Gardens 2.0 is expected to stand out as one of Mombasa’s premier recreational parks and a major attraction for both locals and visitors.
The transformation of Uhuru Gardens signals Mombasa County’s commitment to creating inclusive, green, and vibrant public spaces that support recreation, culture, and tourism growth.
