The National Assembly has approved the appointment of Dr. Duncan Ojwang Oburu as the new Chairperson of the Independent Policing Oversight Authority (IPOA), paving the way for him to take over the leadership of the police oversight body. Ojwang will succeed Justice Ahmed Issack Hassan, who left the position in February 2026 after being appointed to the Court of Appeal.

Ojwang Set to Take Over IPOA

IPOA Vice Chairperson Anne Wanjiku Mwangi has been serving as acting chairperson since Hassan’s departure. President William Ruto nominated Ojwang for the position in July 2026 before forwarding his name to Parliament for vetting and approval.

During his appearance before the National Assembly Departmental Committee on Administration and Internal Security on August 12, Ojwang promised to safeguard IPOA’s independence and ensure the authority carries out its mandate without interference. He told MPs that he was prepared to speak honestly and hold those in power accountable while carrying out his responsibilities.

Appointment Awaits Formal Confirmation

With Parliament approving his nomination, the next step is for National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetang’ula to formally communicate the decision to President Ruto. Ojwang will then be officially appointed and take the oath of office as the new IPOA chairperson.

His appointment comes as IPOA continues to play a key role in overseeing police conduct, investigating complaints and promoting accountability within the National Police Service.
