Rural Electrification and Energy Access

To accelerate electrification across the county, the government has launched a Sh2.3 billion rural electrification project. The initiative will connect households, schools, businesses, and public institutions to the national grid, significantly boosting economic activity and quality of life.

Sports and Youth Empowerment

Turkana’s youth and sports sector will benefit from the ongoing construction of a Sh900 million modern stadium in Lodwar. The facility is expected to promote talent development, community engagement, and regional sporting events.

Advancing Food Security Through Irrigation

In a strategic move to combat food insecurity, President Ruto announced a Sh2.5 billion expansion of the Turkwel Irrigation Scheme. The project will bring over 100,000 acres of arable land under cultivation, enabling commercial farming and improved household incomes.

Boosting the Blue Economy

To tap into Turkana’s fishing potential, the plan includes the construction of two modern fish markets worth Sh700 million. These will improve value chains, enhance storage and processing facilities, and empower local fishing communities.

Health and Education Infrastructure

Turkana’s health sector is set for a major boost with the upgrading and equipping of the Lodwar County Referral Hospital. This project aims to enhance service delivery, especially for maternal, emergency, and specialized healthcare.

Additionally, a Sh2.3 billion student hostel programme is in the pipeline. The initiative will ensure safe and decent accommodation for students in universities and colleges across the county, improving learning conditions and retention.

Universal Health Coverage Push

President Ruto also used the occasion to rally local leaders to encourage residents to register with the Social Health Authority (SHA). He emphasized that enrollment is crucial for delivering affordable and accessible healthcare to every household.

A New Era for Turkana

The President’s announcement marks a turning point for Turkana County, laying the groundwork for inclusive development, better service delivery, and economic empowerment. These landmark investments are expected to transform livelihoods, close historical development gaps, and integrate Turkana more effectively into Kenya’s national economic fabric.
