Retired President Uhuru Kenyatta has strongly condemned what he describes as the resurgence of divisive tribal politics, taking aim at United Democratic Alliance (UDA) Secretary General Hassan Omar Hassan and other leaders he accuses of fueling ethnic divisions.

Speaking during a Jubilee Party delegates’ meeting in Kiambu County, Uhuru cautioned politicians against promoting tribal tensions, warning that such rhetoric could push the country back toward past instability. He stressed that all Kenyans, regardless of their ethnic background, deserve equal respect and protection, urging leaders to refrain from statements that may intimidate or alienate certain communities.

The former Head of State expressed concern that some senior leaders have failed to publicly denounce tribal sentiments, allowing such narratives to gain ground. He noted that the normalization of ethnic-based politics in public forums is worrying and called for honesty and accountability from those in positions of power.

Uhuru referenced the 2007 post-election violence, warning that similar patterns of divisive language preceded the unrest. He urged government officials and security agencies to remain vigilant and ensure that such sentiments are not allowed to escalate. According to him, leaders should instead focus on presenting development agendas and policies that unite the country.

Shifting attention to the economy, Uhuru challenged the current administration to prioritise the struggles facing ordinary citizens. He highlighted the financial strain many households are under, noting that rising costs of living have left families struggling to meet basic needs. He called on leaders to address these pressing issues rather than engaging in political distractions rooted in tribalism.

Uhuru’s remarks come amid growing criticism directed at Hassan Omar over controversial statements made during a recent party meeting. The UDA Secretary General has since issued an apology following backlash from leaders, particularly from the Mt. Kenya region.

Uhuru’s statements serve as a strong reminder of the need for unity and responsible leadership. As political tensions rise, his message underscores the importance of focusing on national cohesion and addressing the real challenges facing Kenyans.
