President William Ruto has intensified his criticism of retired President Uhuru Kenyatta, accusing his predecessor of abandoning the role of a statesman and instead becoming an opposition figure. Speaking during his tour of Siaya County, Ruto welcomed a recent High Court decision barring Kenyatta from holding an office in a political party. The President argued that the former Head of State had undermined the dignity associated with the presidency he once held.
Ruto questioned why Kenyatta had chosen to remain active in opposition politics after leaving office, saying he expected him to take on a statesman’s role. The President also accused Kenyatta of supporting opposition figures seeking to challenge his administration, while dismissing the opposition as lacking clear plans and policies for the country.
Ruto made the remarks while campaigning for his re-election in Siaya, an area associated with ODM leader Dr. Oburu Odinga.
Ruto Targets Opposition
The President urged Kenyans to reject opposition leaders whom he accused of taking chances with the country’s future. Ruto said Kenya was too important to be left in the hands of leaders he claimed were operating without clear policies or programmes.
ODM Chairperson Gladys Wanga echoed the President’s criticism, questioning the political parties and agendas of some opposition leaders. National Assembly Minority Leader Junet Mohamed also spoke about divisions within the opposition, alleging that some leaders were relying on former President Kenyatta for political support.
Leaders Back Ruto’s Re-election Bid
Several leaders accompanying Ruto during his Siaya tour praised his administration and urged residents to support his bid for another term in 2027. Energy Cabinet Secretary Opiyo Wandayi said Ruto had demonstrated his commitment to the people of Siaya through development projects.
Treasury Cabinet Secretary John Mbadi also pledged political support for Ruto, saying the Luo community would remain united ahead of the 2027 General Election. Internal Security and National Administration Principal Secretary Raymond Omollo similarly expressed his support for the President, citing projects undertaken by his administration.
Ruto Launches Road Projects in Siaya
During the visit, President Ruto launched the construction of the Kalandi-Ka Elija Road and Rabongo-Usenge Road. He also inspected ongoing construction works on the Dhogoye Bridge in Bondo Constituency as part of his development tour of the region. The visit came as the political environment continues to take shape ahead of the 2027 General Election, with leaders from both the government and opposition camps positioning themselves for the next electoral contest.
