
Prominent Zimbabwean businessman Wicknell Chivayo and his wife, Lucy “Lulu” Muteke, have died after the helicopter they were travelling in crashed in the Marondera Rural area of Zimbabwe. The incident occurred at around 5pm on Wednesday, September 30, 2026, in Mashonaland East Province, southeast of the capital, Harare. Zimbabwean authorities confirmed that the aircraft had six occupants and that there were no survivors. Police and emergency responders were dispatched to the crash site as efforts to establish the identities of those who died got underway.
Family Confirms Chivayo’s Death
Chivayo’s family later confirmed that the businessman and his wife were among those who died in the crash. Family spokesperson Herbert Chivayo confirmed the deaths to Zimbabwe’s state broadcaster ZBC News, saying the family was struggling to come to terms with the tragedy.
Government spokesperson Nick Mangwana had earlier said the helicopter was carrying a high-profile businessman, other passengers and two pilots. He confirmed that there were no survivors while noting that police would provide further details on the identities of the victims. The cause of the crash remains unknown, with investigations expected to establish what happened before the helicopter went down.
Who Was Wicknell Chivayo?
Chivayo was one of Zimbabwe’s most recognisable businessmen. He founded Intratrek Zimbabwe and became associated with major energy and infrastructure projects, including the Gwanda Solar Project. He was also widely known for his lavish lifestyle and high-profile presence on social media, where he frequently showcased his interactions with prominent political, business and entertainment figures.
Chivayo had close ties with Zimbabwean President Emmerson Mnangagwa and was also photographed with several other African leaders, including Kenyan President William Ruto. His business dealings and political connections had attracted public scrutiny over the years, including allegations concerning government contracts and political influence. Chivayo had denied wrongdoing in relation to such allegations.
Investigation Underway
Authorities have yet to announce what caused the helicopter to crash or provide details of its flight path and the circumstances immediately preceding the accident. Investigators are expected to examine the aircraft, its flight records, weather conditions and other factors as they work to establish the cause of the tragedy. The deaths of Chivayo, his wife and the other occupants have prompted condolences from across Zimbabwe as authorities continue with investigations into the fatal crash.
