The Judicial Service Commission (JSC) has formally announced an opening in the Supreme Court of Kenya following the passing of Justice Mohamed Ibrahim. In a Gazette notice issued by Chief Justice Martha Koome, who also serves as the Chairperson of the JSC, the Commission invited eligible Kenyans to apply for appointment as a judge of the apex court. The recruitment process will be conducted in line with the Constitution, the Judicial Service Act, and Article 166 of the Constitution of Kenya.

According to the notice, the successful applicant will serve until reaching the mandatory retirement age of 70 years, although judges may opt for early retirement at 65. The JSC disclosed that the position comes with a gross monthly salary ranging from Ksh. 956,192 to Ksh. 1,268,996, excluding additional benefits. The remuneration package is set by the Salaries and Remuneration Commission (SRC).

To qualify, applicants must possess a law degree from a recognised institution or be admitted as advocates of the High Court of Kenya. In addition, candidates are required to have at least 15 years of experience, either as a judge of a superior court or as a distinguished legal practitioner, academic, or judicial officer. Prospective candidates must also demonstrate compliance with the leadership and integrity requirements outlined in Chapter Six of the Constitution.

The vacancy arose following the death of Justice Mohamed Ibrahim on December 17, 2025, reducing the Supreme Court bench to six members. Justice Ibrahim was widely admired for his role in shaping Kenya’s constitutional law and his dedicated service to the Judiciary. Qualified and interested individuals have been directed to submit their applications through the JSC online recruitment portal within the stipulated timelines.
