Matatu Operators Announce Nationwide Strike Over Vehicle Torchings

Matatu operators have announced plans to go on strike starting Monday next week, citing what they describe as government inaction following a series of incidents in which public service vehicles were allegedly torched by boda boda operators. In a statement released through their associations, the operators said the decision to down tools was reached after repeated appeals to authorities failed to yield action. They accused the government of failing to protect their vehicles, crews and passengers despite rising cases of violence targeting matatus.

The operators said several vehicles have been vandalised or set ablaze in recent weeks during confrontations involving boda boda riders, resulting in heavy financial losses and disruptions to public transport services. According to the matatu owners, the lack of arrests and prosecutions has emboldened perpetrators, leaving drivers and conductors fearful for their safety.

They warned that the strike could significantly disrupt transport services across major towns and cities if their concerns are not addressed before Monday. The operators are demanding decisive government intervention, including improved security, enforcement of the law and compensation for destroyed vehicles. The government is yet to issue an official response, but the looming strike is expected to pile pressure on authorities as commuters brace for possible travel disruptions.
