Prime Cabinet Secretary Musalia Mudavadi has urged Kenyans to strictly follow health guidelines issued by the Ministry of Health following reports of an Ebola virus outbreak in Uganda and the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC).

Speaking in Murang’a County during the launch of the Ahadi Kenya Trust Jigger Archive and Community Resource Centre, Mudavadi emphasized the importance of public awareness and preparedness in preventing the spread of the deadly disease. He encouraged Kenyans to draw lessons from the COVID-19 pandemic, noting that adherence to health protocols played a key role in saving lives.

We must remain alert and follow all health guidelines to ensure our country stays safe and free from Ebola

Although Kenya has not reported any Ebola cases so far, Mudavadi cautioned that complacency could put the country at risk. He warned that a more dangerous strain of the virus is circulating in neighbouring countries and has already claimed lives.

This strain appears difficult to treat at the moment. We must therefore be extra careful with hygiene and how we interact with one another

The African Union’s health agency has warned that at least 10 African countries are at risk of exposure to the Ebola virus, beyond the already affected DRC and Uganda. The outbreak in the DRC, declared on May 15, is linked to the Bundibugyo strain, which currently has no approved vaccine or specific treatment.

According to the latest update from the DRC Ministry of Health:

  • Over 900 suspected cases have been reported
  • At least 204 deaths have been recorded across three provinces

The figures highlight the seriousness of the outbreak and the urgent need for preventive measures across the region.
