The National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) has announced the rollout of compulsory refresher training for all drivers, set to begin in July 2026. The move is part of renewed efforts to enhance road safety and reduce the number of accidents across the country.
According to the authority, the refresher courses will target both private and commercial drivers, ensuring they are up to date with current traffic laws, road safety practices, and responsible driving behavior. NTSA says the training will play a key role in addressing human error, which remains one of the leading causes of road crashes.
The program is expected to cover critical areas such as defensive driving, proper vehicle handling, adherence to traffic regulations, and emergency response techniques. Drivers will also be educated on the importance of discipline on the road, including avoiding speeding, drunk driving, and distracted driving.
Transport stakeholders have welcomed the directive, noting that continuous training is essential in improving driver competence and promoting a culture of safety. However, some have raised concerns about the cost and implementation process, urging NTSA to ensure the program is accessible and affordable to all motorists.
NTSA has assured the public that more details on registration, training centers, and timelines will be communicated ahead of the launch. The authority is also expected to partner with accredited driving schools and institutions to facilitate the program nationwide. As the July 2026 start date approaches, drivers are being encouraged to prepare for the training and embrace the initiative as a step toward safer roads for everyone.

That’s a really sensible step. It’s about time we had more consistent driver training to hopefully see a drop in accidents.
