More than 100 people have fallen ill following a suspected food poisoning outbreak at a burial ceremony in Inoi Ward, Kirinyaga Central Sub-County. The incident occurred on Friday, August 14, 2026, at the home of David Nyagah, where about 600 mourners attended the burial and consumed food prepared for the gathering.
According to the Kirinyaga County Government, around 100 people developed symptoms after the event. By August 17, 68 patients had received treatment and been discharged, while 14 others, including two children below five years, were still admitted at ACK Mt. Kenya Hospital. No deaths had been reported.
Patients Report Food Poisoning Symptoms
Those affected reported several symptoms, including diarrhoea, vomiting, abdominal pain, headaches, chills and general weakness. Some patients also experienced elevated blood pressure, including individuals who had no previous history of hypertension. Health officials said the symptoms began between 24 hours and three days after the mourners consumed the food.
Health Team Investigates Incident
A five-member public health team visited the area on August 15 and 17 to establish what may have caused the outbreak. The team inspected Ndungu’s Spices in Kerugoya, which catered the event, a butchery in Githioro that supplied the meat, and Beulah Springs in Mugetha, where the water used was sourced. Investigators raised concerns over how the cooked food was handled before being served.
The food reportedly remained for between five and six hours before serving and was exposed to direct sunlight for extended periods, raising concerns about temperature control and food safety. Officials also found that hygiene practices at the inspected water bottling facility did not meet the required standards. The facility was subsequently issued with a compliance notice.
Food and Clinical Samples Collected
Health authorities have collected food and clinical samples for laboratory testing as investigations continue. Affected individuals were referred for medical assessment and treatment, while food handlers received training on proper hygiene and hand-washing practices. The county health department has also intensified surveillance to identify and respond to any additional cases linked to the incident.
MP Urges Caution at Public Gatherings
Kirinyaga Central MP Gachoki Gitari has urged residents to take food safety seriously, particularly during large public gatherings such as weddings, funerals and other ceremonies. Gitari called on caterers, butcheries and water vendors to maintain high hygiene standards and ensure food is properly prepared, stored and served safely. The investigation into the suspected food poisoning outbreak remains ongoing as health officials await laboratory results.
