American television presenter Rob Finnerty has apologised to Kenyans following backlash over his remarks comparing New York City’s immigrant situation to Nairobi. The Newsmax host sparked outrage during a live primetime broadcast when he suggested that the arrival of immigrants from developing countries was making some American cities resemble the Kenyan capital. During the broadcast, Finnerty criticised former US President Joe Biden’s immigration policies, claiming that millions of people from Africa, the Middle East and South America had entered the country.

He argued that immigrants settling in sanctuary cities were changing their appearance, saying the cities were beginning to look more like Nairobi than New York. Finnerty also drew comparisons with the United Kingdom and France, claiming the two European countries were experiencing similar challenges involving undocumented migrants.

His remarks triggered widespread criticism on social media, with many Kenyans expressing displeasure over the portrayal of Nairobi. Following the backlash, Finnerty took to his X account to apologise to the people of Nairobi, acknowledging that his comments were a mistake. The presenter praised Kenyans for their strong attachment to their city and country, adding that he regretted offending anyone through his remarks. Finnerty admitted that he had misspoken and extended an apology to those who felt hurt by his comments.

Kenyans Demand On-Air Apology

Despite the public apology, some Kenyans have expressed dissatisfaction with Finnerty’s response, arguing that it does not adequately address the controversy. Some social media users have called on the Newsmax presenter to issue an apology during a live television broadcast, noting that the original remarks were made on air. The incident has fuelled debate online about how African cities are portrayed in international media and the language used when discussing immigration and urban challenges.
