Kenyan marathon star Eliud Kipchoge has thrown his weight behind the Race for Mobility campaign, which aims to raise KSh100 million to provide specialised wheelchairs to children living with disabilities. The campaign, led by Hope Mobility Kenya founder Michael Panther, will see him participate in the 42-kilometre race at the 2026 Standard Chartered Nairobi Marathon on October 25.

Panther, who lives with a disability, is set to make history by becoming the first person with a disability to compete in the marathon’s full 42-kilometre category using a professional racing wheelchair. During a meeting with Panther, Kipchoge praised the initiative, describing it as an inspiring demonstration of determination and resilience.

The marathon legend encouraged people living with disabilities, including children, to embrace sports and pursue opportunities that can help them overcome social and physical barriers. Panther will use a racing wheelchair known as the “Red Ferrari” as he seeks to raise enough funds to provide at least 200 custom-fitted pediatric wheelchairs.

According to Panther, access to appropriate mobility devices can help children attend school, access healthcare and participate more fully in social activities alongside their peers. The funds raised will support Hope Mobility Kenya in producing and distributing specialised wheelchairs based on the World Health Organization’s eight-step wheelchair service process. The approach ensures that each wheelchair is assessed, fitted and adapted to meet the individual needs of the child.

The National Council for Persons with Disabilities estimates that Kenya faces a shortage of about 550,000 wheelchairs and other mobility devices, with children accounting for approximately 200,000 of the gap. Panther said each specialised wheelchair costs about KSh50,000, making the campaign critical in expanding access to mobility support for children across the country.
