The Football Kenya Federation (FKF) has taken a significant step towards strengthening grassroots football after entering into a partnership with the Council of Governors aimed at improving talent development and football structures nationwide. The collaboration was reached following a meeting between FKF President Hussein Mohammed and Council of Governors Chairman Ahmed Abdullahi. The two parties agreed to work closely through a standardized memorandum of understanding that will guide cooperation between FKF and all 47 county governments.
Under the proposed framework, both FKF and county governments will harmonize key aspects of football management, including affiliation fees across counties. The partnership will also focus on joint training programs for referees and coaches, as well as the organization of structured and competitive football events at the grassroots level. The initiative is expected to enhance talent identification and strengthen youth development programs, giving young players a clearer pathway to advance within Kenya’s football system—from local leagues to national and professional levels.
Speaking on the agreement, Abdullahi noted that the collaboration will ensure uniformity and better coordination in football activities across counties. He emphasized the importance of standardizing operations to improve the overall quality of the sport. FKF President Hussein Mohammed highlighted the vital role county governments play in supporting local leagues and building a sustainable football ecosystem. He stressed that strengthening grassroots competitions will not only nurture talent but also open up economic opportunities within the sport.
He added that the long-term goal is to commercialize football sustainably, creating jobs and empowering thousands of young people who are passionate about the game. The partnership forms part of FKF’s broader strategy to revive Kenyan football by enhancing governance, expanding competitive platforms, and ensuring that talent from every corner of the country has a fair opportunity to thrive.
