
As of August 1, 2025, Kenya had recorded a total of 314 confirmed cases of mpox spanning in 22 counties, since the outbreak began in July 2024. The country also reported five fatalities, reflecting a case fatality rate of approximately 1.6% with t highest numbers were reported in Mombasa County which had 146 cases and Busia County which had 63 cases. Other counties such as Nakuru recorded 21, Kilifi recorded 19, Nairobi recorded 17 and more were also affected. At that time, 33 patients were hospitalized, 54 cases were under home-based isolation and 222 individuals had fully recovered.
Three new Mpox Cases in Nyandarua County
On September 5, 2025, health authorities confirmed three mpox cases in Nyandarua County whereby one patient is being treated at Engineer Level Four Hospital, two others who happen to be a couple from Ndaragwa, are receiving care in the isolation ward at Nyahururu County Hospital whereas their two children tested negative but are under medical surveillance. The health authorities recommende that two relatives of the couple to be under home quarantine so as to be sure they are not affected
It is important to note that Laikipia County has not recorded any cases, and the couple’s treatment at Nyahururu was solely due to access to better-equipped facilities
What This Means for Kenya & Nyandarua
It is clear to note that there is an expansion of Mpox cases into New Counties like Nyandarua and Laikipia hence this marks a notable spread beyond historically high-burden areas like Mombasa and Busia. Also the affected areas should be able to act swiftly on the cases as failure to which will only escalate the cases and this could become a national health crisis. The government under the health administration should put meaures in place to make sure people stay vigilant. Public education and awareness should serve as a key factor in making sure people know what they are dealing with and there should be easy access to isolation units.
Given that only certain facilities like Nyahururu County Hospital are equipped to handle mpox cases, counties like Nyandarua is likely toface challenges in capacity and resource allocation
