The Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) is preparing to roll out a digital voter registration platform as part of efforts to increase participation among young Kenyans ahead of future elections. The move is intended to modernise the voter registration process while making it more accessible to youths, many of whom are more comfortable engaging through digital platforms. IEBC officials say the initiative is part of broader electoral reforms designed to strengthen democracy and improve inclusivity.
Boosting Youth Participation
Young people make up a significant portion of Kenya’s population, yet voter registration and turnout among this group has historically lagged behind. By introducing an online registration system, the commission hopes to remove barriers such as long queues, travel distances, and limited registration centres. The digital platform is expected to allow eligible voters to register or update their details remotely, subject to verification requirements set by the commission.
Technology and Electoral Reforms
According to IEBC, the planned system will incorporate security features to protect voter data and prevent fraud. The commission has also indicated that the digital rollout will complement, not replace, physical registration centres to ensure no eligible voter is left out. Stakeholders say the initiative could significantly improve efficiency, transparency and public confidence in the electoral process if implemented successfully.
Public Awareness and Education
Alongside the rollout, IEBC plans to intensify civic education campaigns to inform youths about the importance of voter registration and participation in democratic processes. Partnerships with learning institutions and youth organisations are expected to play a key role in driving awareness. The commission has assured the public that further details on timelines and eligibility requirements will be communicated once the platform is officially launched.
