The Kenya Meteorological Department (KMD) has forecast predominantly sunny and dry weather across most parts of the country for the week running from January 13 to January 19, 2026. According to the department’s weekly outlook, many regions will experience clear skies and minimal rainfall for much of the period. However, isolated showers are expected in a few areas, especially the Highlands east and west of the Rift Valley, the Rift Valley, the Lake Victoria Basin, the Coastal region, and parts of the south-eastern lowlands.
High Daytime Temperatures Expected
KMD noted that daytime temperatures are set to climb above 30°C in several regions, including the Coastal belt, North-eastern Kenya, and North-western Kenya. Hot conditions are also likely in parts of the South-eastern lowlands, sections of the Rift Valley, and Western Kenya.
Cooler Nights in Elevated Areas
While daytime heat will dominate in many locations, cooler nights are expected in high-altitude regions. Minimum temperatures in some areas could drop below 10°C, especially in elevated zones such as the Central Highlands and parts of the Rift Valley. The department added that overall, January 2026 is expected to remain largely sunny and dry, although brief rainfall episodes may still occur
Areas Likely to Experience Occasional Rain
- Western Kenya
- The Lake Victoria Basin
- The Southern Rift Valley
- Highlands east and west of the Rift Valley, including Nairobi County
- Parts of the south-eastern lowlands
- Southern coastal areas
These showers are expected to be localized and short-lived but could still impact daily activities.
Advisory to the Public and Farmers
Residents and travelers are encouraged to plan their activities carefully, keeping in mind the high daytime temperatures in hotter regions and the cold nights in elevated areas. Farmers, particularly in regions likely to receive rainfall, have been advised to prepare for localized showers that may influence planting, harvesting, or other agricultural operations.
The meteorological department urged Kenyans to stay updated with official weather alerts and advisories, especially in regions prone to sudden changes in weather conditions. These include the Central Highlands, North and Central Rift Valley, Western Kenya, and areas around Mount Kilimanjaro. In addition to the weekly forecast, KMD has also released a broader climate outlook for January 2026, providing guidance on expected weather trends throughout the month.
