The National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) has introduced a new Automated Instant Fines Traffic Management System aimed at improving road discipline and reducing traffic violations across Kenya. Under the new system, motorists who commit traffic offences will receive instant SMS notifications informing them of the violation and the corresponding fine. The authority says the digital platform is designed to improve transparency and efficiency in traffic enforcement.
How the System Works
According to the National Transport and Safety Authority, the new system operates automatically without direct human involvement. This means traffic violations captured through approved monitoring technologies will trigger instant alerts to motorists. Drivers will receive a text message detailing the offence committed and instructions on how to settle the fine. NTSA says the automation of the process eliminates opportunities for manipulation while promoting accountability in traffic law enforcement.
Payment of Traffic Fines
Motorists issued with fines through the new system will be required to pay them through the nationwide branch network of KCB Group. The authority has set a seven-day deadline for drivers to clear the penalties after receiving the notification. Failure to pay within this period will attract additional interest charges, increasing the total amount owed.
Consequences of Unpaid Fines
NTSA warned that motorists with outstanding fines will face restrictions when accessing services on NTSA platforms. Drivers or vehicle owners with pending penalties may be blocked from transacting on NTSA digital services until the fines are fully paid. This measure is intended to encourage prompt compliance and prevent motorists from ignoring penalties.
Government Efforts to Improve Road Safety
The introduction of the automated fines system is part of broader government efforts to enhance road safety and enforce traffic regulations more effectively. Authorities believe that leveraging technology in traffic management will help reduce reckless driving, improve compliance with road rules, and ultimately lower the number of road accidents in the country. NTSA has also urged motorists to adhere to traffic laws and respond promptly to any official notifications received through the system.
The rollout of the automated instant fines system marks a significant shift in how traffic offences are handled in Kenya. By digitizing enforcement and minimizing human intervention, NTSA hopes to build a more transparent and efficient traffic management system while encouraging responsible driving among Kenyan motorists.
