Tanzanian President Samia Suluhu Hassan has ordered a full-scale investigation into the chaos that erupted during recent poll activities, blaming elements within the opposition and certain non-governmental organisations (NGOs) for fueling tensions and disrupting the electoral process.

Speaking during an address in Dodoma, President Suluhu expressed concern over what she termed as “deliberate attempts to destabilise the nation.” She insisted that her administration would not tolerate actors within or outside the political sphere who attempt to incite violence or interfere with national stability.

According to the President, preliminary reports pointed to coordinated efforts by some opposition groups working alongside specific NGOs to influence public sentiment and trigger unrest ahead of the polls. She said these activities posed a threat to peace and the credibility of the country’s democratic institutions. The Head of State directed national security agencies to begin a thorough and transparent investigation to identify individuals and organisations involved.

We must protect our democracy. Anyone found responsible for inciting chaos or manipulating the process will be held fully accountable

President Suluhu also urged Tanzanians to remain calm as authorities undertake the probe, assuring the public that the government is committed to ensuring free, fair and peaceful elections. She emphasized that political competition should never come at the expense of national unity.

Opposition leaders have denied the accusations, dismissing them as politically motivated, while several NGOs have challenged the government to release evidence supporting the claims. Rights groups have since called for an independent review to maintain transparency. The coming days are expected to be pivotal as investigators move to compile reports and present findings to the relevant government bodies.
