Somalia has hailed UEFA’s decision to appoint Somali referee Omar Artan to officiate the 2026 UEFA Super Cup, describing it as a major milestone and a proud moment for the nation.

Prime Minister Hamza Abdi Barre congratulated Artan following UEFA’s announcement on June 11, confirming that he will oversee the high-profile match between Paris Saint-Germain and Aston Villa in Salzburg, Austria, on August 12. Barre said the appointment highlights UEFA’s recognition of talent and its commitment to inclusivity in global football.

He added that the recognition underscores football’s ability to unite people beyond borders and cultures, while also expressing appreciation to UEFA for acknowledging Artan’s achievements. UEFA confirmed that Artan will referee the clash between Champions League winners Paris Saint-Germain and Europa League champions Aston Villa, marking a historic first as the initial non-European official to take charge of the UEFA Super Cup.

The appointment comes shortly after Artan faced a setback when he was denied entry into the United States, where he had been scheduled to officiate at the 2026 FIFA World Cup. Despite travelling with valid documentation, including a diplomatic passport and visa, US authorities blocked his entry, citing alleged associations with individuals linked to extremist groups. Artan has strongly denied the claims, insisting he had met all the required travel conditions.

I had all the right documents. I am simply a referee chasing my dream of officiating at the World Cup

FIFA later confirmed that he would not be able to take part in the tournament following consultations with US authorities. UEFA President Aleksander Čeferin praised Artan’s capabilities, describing him as a highly skilled and experienced referee who has excelled in African competitions.
