As the clock ticks down to President William Ruto’s State of the Nation address, scheduled for Thursday afternoon today in Parliament, Nairobi is experiencing heightened security measures.

A robust presence of law enforcement has been deployed around critical areas, including State House and the parliamentary grounds, in preparation for this highly awaited speech. The upcoming address comes at a time of increasing public unrest, with many Kenyans expressing their frustration over persistent corruption, troubling reports of kidnapping by security agencies, and a notable surge in femicide cases.

The atmosphere is further charged by planned protests under the banner “Occupy Parliament,” which are set to coincide with the President’s remarks. However, the National Police Service (NPS) has declared these demonstrations unlawful, asserting that the organizers neglected to inform the authorities about the specifics of their protests as required by law.

Moses Wetang’ula, Speaker of the National Assembly, has confirmed that President Ruto will deliver his address from Parliament on Thursday. In his communication to MPs, Wetang’ula outlined essential logistical details, cautioning members to prepare for minor disruptions due to the day’s arrangements.

In a bid to streamline parking, Wetang’ula indicated that only House leadership will have the privilege of parking within the parliamentary premises. Other members will be directed to use the parking facilities available at Bunge Towers. “Arrive with your drivers, who can drop you off at the gate before proceeding to park at Bunge Towers. We’ve ensured there’s ample parking for all,” Wetang’ula explained.

The State of the Nation Address is a constitutional obligation under Article 132, which requires the President to update the nation on vital matters such as national security, efforts to maintain national values, and Kenya’s progress in fulfilling its international commitments. In this crucial address, President Ruto is expected to outline his government’s strategies for addressing these pressing issues and respond to the growing concerns of the public.

As the nation waits with bated breath, Kenyans are eager to learn how the President plans to tackle the significant challenges facing the country amidst a backdrop of unrest and increasing public scrutiny. The stage is set for a moment of accountability and reflection—one that could shape the course of governance in Kenya in the months to come.
