After weeks of anticipation, Kenya has officially settled the required hosting fee for the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), signaling a major step forward in its co-hosting ambitions. The government confirmed that all financial obligations set by the Confederation of African Football have now been fulfilled.

According to Sports Cabinet Secretary Salim Mvurya, the payment of USD 30 million (approximately KSh 3.9 billion) marks a significant milestone in Kenya’s preparations. He noted that the country has now met both financial and institutional requirements, strengthening its position as a co-host for AFCON 2027 under the regional “Pamoja” bid.

The government has also restructured the Local Organizing Committee (LOC), bringing together expertise from both the public and private sectors. This move is aimed at enhancing efficiency and ensuring that preparations for the continental tournament are handled professionally. However, uncertainty remains over the leadership of the committee, with reports suggesting that CEO Mike Rabar may no longer be in the role. Authorities are yet to issue an official statement clarifying the changes.

With the latest inspection by CAF completed, Kenya is now entering a more intense phase of preparation. Priority will be given to upgrading stadiums, improving training facilities, and enhancing transport infrastructure to meet international standards. These developments are expected to align with CAF’s recommendations as the country works toward delivering a successful tournament.

The government has emphasized that hosting AFCON 2027 is not just about football, but also about broader national benefits. The tournament is expected to boost the economy, create employment opportunities, and empower young people across the country. Officials also highlighted Kenya’s ambition to position itself as a leading global destination for major sporting events.

Kenya is co-hosting the tournament alongside regional partners, with ongoing discussions aimed at streamlining travel and logistics. Partner states are set to meet in the coming weeks to finalize frameworks on visa facilitation and customs procedures to ensure a seamless experience for teams and fans.

The payment of the hosting fee represents a crucial step in Kenya’s AFCON 2027 journey. As preparations gather pace, attention will now shift to infrastructure readiness and organizational efficiency, key elements that will determine the success of the tournament.
