Kenyatta National Hospital (KNH) has addressed concerns surrounding a bullet retrieved during the treatment of a patient injured in a recent shooting incident in Nairobi’s Pipeline area. In a statement released on Sunday, KNH confirmed that the bullet removed during medical treatment was safely retained and preserved as part of official medical and evidentiary records. The hospital emphasized that all procedures were followed in line with established protocols.
KNH further clarified that such items are typically handed over to investigative authorities through proper legal channels for forensic examination and further action. The clarification follows a tragic shooting on August 3, where a stray bullet passed through the body of Moreen Nduku before striking 16-year-old Abdala Lihan and lodging in his leg. Moreen, a mother of one, later succumbed to her injuries at KNH after four days of treatment.
Initial reports had suggested that the bullet removed from the teenager had gone missing, raising concerns and sparking public outcry.
The incident has drawn criticism from human rights activists, who have accused authorities of negligence and failing to respond adequately. Questions have also been raised regarding the involvement of a police officer allegedly linked to Shauri Moyo Police Station, though the Independent Policing Oversight Authority (IPOA) has yet to issue a formal statement.
The hospital reiterated its commitment to transparency and cooperation, stating that it remains ready to provide any necessary information to investigators through the appropriate legal processes. KNH’s statement aims to clear the air over the handling of the recovered bullet, even as calls for justice and accountability continue to grow following the deadly shooting incident.
