Motorists along Waiyaki Way are facing significant traffic congestion following the temporary closure of the overpass at the ABC Place–Red Hill Road Junction. The disruption has resulted in long queues along the busy Nairobi corridor as motorists adjust to a temporary diversion affecting users of the Nairobi Expressway Westlands Exit.
Westlands Exit Traffic Diverted
The temporary traffic arrangement was announced by MOJA Expressway Company, which said maintenance and construction works would be carried out along the elevated expressway deck after the Westlands Exit. The works began at 8pm on September 8, 2026, and are scheduled to continue until 5pm on September 20, 2026.
During the maintenance period, motorists exiting the Nairobi Expressway at Westlands have been directed to use the lower A8 road along Waiyaki Way. The diversion is expected to put additional pressure on Waiyaki Way and surrounding roads, particularly during morning and evening peak hours.
Motorists Urged to Exercise Caution
MOJA Expressway has advised motorists using the affected routes to remain cautious and follow directions from traffic marshals deployed to manage traffic flow. The company has also clarified that toll station operations on the Nairobi Expressway will continue normally throughout the maintenance period.
Motorists have been encouraged to plan their journeys in advance and allow extra travel time to accommodate possible delays caused by the diversion. MOJA Expressway apologised to motorists for the inconvenience arising from the temporary traffic arrangements and thanked road users for their continued use of the Nairobi Expressway.
Traffic Disruption Expected Until September 20
With the works expected to run for nearly two weeks, motorists using Waiyaki Way, Westlands and neighbouring routes have been urged to consider alternative routes where possible. Authorities and traffic marshals are expected to continue monitoring traffic flow and guiding motorists as the maintenance works proceed.
