Kenyan middle-distance star Faith Kipyegon has revealed she is steadily recovering from a hamstring injury and is using the upcoming 3,000m race at the Diamond League meeting in Monaco as a key step toward regaining peak form. The decorated athlete, a multiple Olympic and world champion in the 1,500m, is looking to rebuild her rhythm and confidence after a challenging outing in Eugene last week, where she finished third in the mile.
Kipyegon admitted she was not at full strength during the race, estimating her performance at about 98 percent. However, she noted that competing below peak condition is often part of life at the highest level of athletics. She emphasized that setbacks are normal in sport, pointing out that fans may not always see the intense preparation, injuries, and sacrifices athletes endure behind the scenes. According to her, accepting defeat is part of growth and helps build resilience for future competitions.
The 32-year-old explained that her recent loss did not come as a surprise, as she was still working her way back from injury and had not fully regained her confidence. Despite the challenges, Kipyegon expressed optimism about her recovery, saying she is close to returning to full fitness. She remains focused on gradually improving and delivering strong performances as the season progresses.
Heading into the Monaco meet, she said her main goal is to rediscover her racing rhythm and rebuild confidence on the track. The race holds special significance for her, as she previously set a world mile record at the same venue in 2023. Kipyegon added that understanding one’s body is critical for any athlete, noting that it is rare to compete completely free of discomfort. She highlighted the importance of mental strength, especially when competing in major events while managing physical challenges.
With no World Championships or Olympic Games scheduled this season, Kipyegon has shifted her focus to the inaugural World Athletics Ultimate Championship set for September in Budapest. She described the event as her primary target, with the goal of being fully fit and at her best by the end of the season.
