The Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) has arrested the Clerk of the Nyamira County Assembly over alleged procurement irregularities amounting to more than KSh 30 million. According to the anti-graft agency, the arrest follows investigations into the construction of an office block at the Nyamira County Assembly, where officials are suspected to have flouted procurement laws and mismanaged public funds.
Preliminary findings indicate that due process may not have been followed during the tendering and awarding of the construction contract. Investigators believe the irregularities led to inflated costs and possible loss of taxpayer money. The EACC stated that the suspect was taken into custody to assist with ongoing investigations and is expected to be arraigned in court once the probe is complete. The commission reiterated its commitment to tackling corruption in public institutions, warning that individuals found culpable—regardless of their position—will face the full force of the law.
The arrest comes amid increased scrutiny of county governments over the use of public funds, especially in infrastructure projects, which have often been flagged for irregular procurement practices. Residents and stakeholders in Nyamira have welcomed the move, calling for accountability and transparency in the management of county resources. The EACC has urged members of the public to continue reporting suspected corruption cases, emphasizing that public participation is key in the fight against graft.
As investigations continue, the case highlights the ongoing challenges in public procurement and the need for strict adherence to financial regulations. The outcome is expected to set a precedent in reinforcing accountability within county administrations.
